[00:01:41] We are live. Welcome this Tuesday.
[00:01:44] This is season nine,
[00:01:46] episode 11 of the
[00:01:47] BuiltOnAir podcast.
[00:01:49] Good to be with you.
[00:01:50] My name is Dan Fellars,
[00:01:52] one of the hosts
[00:01:53] and founders of BuiltOnAir
[00:01:55] and we have a special guest with us,
[00:01:58] Zoltan. Welcome Zoltan.
[00:02:00] How are you?
[00:02:03] Hi there. Sorry I was
[00:02:05] I was just listening to
[00:02:06] I had an echo in my ear.
[00:02:08] So hi. Hi, good morning.
[00:02:10] All right. We'll get to meet Zoltan
[00:02:13] a little bit later in the show
[00:02:14] and find out what you're up to.
[00:02:17] But good to have you with us for for this
[00:02:19] episode.
[00:02:20] And we also have Kamille with us.
[00:02:22] Hello, Kamille.
[00:02:23] Hello.
[00:02:24] Glad you could make it today. Hi Kamille.
[00:02:28] Hi.
[00:02:30] So we've got a good show
[00:02:32] for you guys today,
[00:02:33] as always on the BuiltOnAir
[00:02:35] podcast. We do four different segments
[00:02:37] where we'll go through a variety of
[00:02:39] different things and talk about
[00:02:41] all things Airtable
[00:02:42] and get you up to speed
[00:02:44] on everything new
[00:02:45] and show you some cool stuff
[00:02:47] that ourselves and other
[00:02:49] people are working on. So
[00:02:51] with that we'll kick it off.
[00:02:53] And so for today's show,
[00:02:54] just quickly go through,
[00:02:55] we'll go through all the different
[00:02:57] communities and a Round the Bases segment.
[00:02:59] Will then do a spotlight on On2Air
[00:03:02] our primary sponsor.
[00:03:05] We will then Kamille
[00:03:06] will show us a base that she has built
[00:03:09] and showcase some
[00:03:10] formulas for time interval reporting.
[00:03:13] We'll then hear more about Zoltan and his
[00:03:16] story and what he's doing.
[00:03:19] And then Zoltan will then share
[00:03:21] his new product that will be coming
[00:03:24] to market soon and then we'll
[00:03:26] also do a spotlight on On2Air
[00:03:30] and end it there. So
[00:03:32] with that we will
[00:03:34] kick off with our Round the Bases.
[00:03:37] And we always like to start
[00:03:40] with the Airtable community.
[00:03:43] So this is an ongoing thread.
[00:03:46] Obviously if you're using Airtable,
[00:03:48] you're familiar with the big announcement
[00:03:51] that came out a couple weeks ago,
[00:03:53] the Interface Designer,
[00:03:54] I wanted to bring up the
[00:03:57] original thread because
[00:03:59] if you just saw kind of the announcement
[00:04:02] and you're not following closely,
[00:04:04] you're missing out on some great
[00:04:06] conversation that's happening
[00:04:08] in that thread,
[00:04:08] I don't know, Zoltan and Kamille
[00:04:10] if you've been following this.
[00:04:11] But
[00:04:12] some friends of the show are
[00:04:15] lively engaged in discussing,
[00:04:18] we've got Scott and Kuovonne and Bill
[00:04:22] and others talking about, and Justin
[00:04:26] so there's some great discussion,
[00:04:28] a lot of it revolving around
[00:04:32] the pricing model of will
[00:04:35] Airtable ever allow
[00:04:37] users to use the interface
[00:04:40] that without having to be a paid user,
[00:04:43] a lot of discussion on there
[00:04:47] any Kamille, have you been
[00:04:48] following this thread more?
[00:04:50] I followed the thread
[00:04:52] and then there was also
[00:04:54] two Table Talks about Interface Designer.
[00:04:58] The one from last week was sort of a
[00:05:01] like more of a behind the scenes
[00:05:03] sort of look at
[00:05:04] Interface Designer that had
[00:05:06] some of the developers
[00:05:07] who had worked on it,
[00:05:09] talking about some of the decisions
[00:05:10] they made and what
[00:05:12] their hopes for the future were.
[00:05:14] And
[00:05:15] that was a good
[00:05:18] sort of overview of where
[00:05:20] Interface Designer is today
[00:05:22] and some of the
[00:05:23] limitations that they hope to
[00:05:25] conquer in the future
[00:05:27] and it dovetails kind of nicely
[00:05:29] with this thread
[00:05:30] because it's mostly Jordan,
[00:05:33] who is the community
[00:05:37] head of community at Airtable,
[00:05:39] so she's sort of
[00:05:40] answering questions on behalf
[00:05:42] of the rest of the Airtable team.
[00:05:44] And a lot of the thread is people being,
[00:05:48] you know, a mix of things,
[00:05:49] like being very excited
[00:05:50] because they can solve some
[00:05:51] other use cases right away and some people
[00:05:53] who are like very close to
[00:05:55] solving a use case,
[00:05:56] but it's missing one or two
[00:05:57] features, I'm one of those people
[00:05:59] and then there's people who are like,
[00:06:02] like wholly unconvinced,
[00:06:03] like God, this isn't what I need it all,
[00:06:05] I still need,
[00:06:06] you know, pori or what have you.
[00:06:09] Yeah, definitely a lot of selection,
[00:06:12] Yeah, that Table Talk, I watched that one
[00:06:14] of them, the technical one you described,
[00:06:17] that was really good, gave some good
[00:06:20] insight into
[00:06:22] what they're focused on.
[00:06:24] If I were to summarize that
[00:06:27] Table Talk, some key
[00:06:29] things they definitely hear
[00:06:31] loud and clear
[00:06:32] the need to be able to create new
[00:06:34] records and delete records
[00:06:36] and I think they kind of
[00:06:37] implied that that might be
[00:06:38] hopefully coming soon.
[00:06:41] They also understood the need for
[00:06:44] incorporating apps
[00:06:46] into interfaces although
[00:06:48] that one it sounded like
[00:06:50] was probably farther down the road
[00:06:54] what are some other things highlighted
[00:06:56] in that Table Talk? They also
[00:06:59] addressed
[00:07:00] people wanting to share
[00:07:01] an interface with people
[00:07:03] outside of the base.
[00:07:04] Just the interface itself.
[00:07:06] I don't exactly recall what the
[00:07:10] consensus was from that
[00:07:12] Table Talk
[00:07:13] but they talk about it so you know
[00:07:16] yeah they didn't give
[00:07:18] any hard deadlines or
[00:07:19] there is no hard deadlines
[00:07:21] for anything but they did mention some of
[00:07:23] the things that they were actively
[00:07:25] working on
[00:07:25] and I don't want to mix things up
[00:07:26] so watch that Table Talk.
[00:07:28] Yeah, definitely check out
[00:07:30] that Table Talk insight
[00:07:32] from
[00:07:33] I think there was a
[00:07:34] designer developer and the
[00:07:37] project manager all on that
[00:07:39] call with Aaron.
[00:07:42] So very good.
[00:07:43] But yeah, good insight here.
[00:07:45] I thought people
[00:07:46] shared some really good insight into
[00:07:50] into how people are thinking
[00:07:52] about this
[00:07:53] and it's you know, common threads of
[00:07:56] discussion and concerns
[00:07:58] that I think have been around
[00:07:59] Airtable for a long time.
[00:08:01] So
[00:08:01] I'm pretty sure Airtable
[00:08:03] is aware of these concerns
[00:08:05] but it's always good to
[00:08:06] give them that feedback and hopefully
[00:08:10] they're figuring out their strategy
[00:08:12] long term to address
[00:08:13] some of these pressing
[00:08:14] pressing needs that keep coming up
[00:08:18] as far as sharing data and
[00:08:20] using data permissions
[00:08:22] and those sorts of things.
[00:08:24] So there here's a link
[00:08:25] in this thread to the
[00:08:27] Table Talk must watch.
[00:08:28] Yeah,
[00:08:30] so that's definitely a continuation
[00:08:33] of the the biggest thread that
[00:08:36] that's been happening
[00:08:39] this month. So be sure to check it
[00:08:41] out the last two episodes.
[00:08:43] We've showcased the Interface Designer.
[00:08:46] So check out our previous episodes if
[00:08:49] you haven't watched those
[00:08:50] and want to get more up to
[00:08:52] speed on what's new with
[00:08:54] the Interface Designer. So
[00:08:57] they made some other announcements
[00:08:59] this week
[00:09:01] on managing Airtable at scale.
[00:09:03] So you might see some new functionality.
[00:09:06] These are starting to roll out.
[00:09:09] I've seen some of them in my bases.
[00:09:11] Some of these are enterprise only.
[00:09:14] For example the I believe this ui right?
[00:09:18] Is enterprise only? It is.
[00:09:20] Yeah.
[00:09:21] So if you're an enterprise customer
[00:09:24] you likely see a new interface
[00:09:26] for managing
[00:09:26] your users. It looks like they now
[00:09:29] have the ability to create groups,
[00:09:30] user groups
[00:09:33] and kind of put people into user groups
[00:09:36] and then you can set up some some levels
[00:09:38] of access to the groups
[00:09:40] instead of having to add individual users.
[00:09:44] So hopefully that would be nice
[00:09:47] to see in the pro plan as well
[00:09:49] looks like some audit logs
[00:09:52] at the enterprise level
[00:09:55] and workspace sharing restrictions.
[00:09:59] I think that's that I think is for
[00:10:03] pro as well.
[00:10:06] if that's the existing issue
[00:10:09] or fix that they already had
[00:10:12] and so this one so improved loading
[00:10:16] times for bases of large bases.
[00:10:20] I haven't tested this to see I have
[00:10:23] seen I think this is related to that big
[00:10:26] database upgrade
[00:10:27] that they made a while back.
[00:10:29] So I have noticed a slight increase
[00:10:33] in loading times. I wouldn't say it's
[00:10:37] well actually okay
[00:10:39] so maybe this is even newer
[00:10:41] so they're saying that it's
[00:10:42] going out to enterprise customers
[00:10:44] over the coming months.
[00:10:46] So maybe we haven't seen that yet
[00:10:50] so that would be good to see
[00:10:52] and hopefully that trickles down
[00:10:54] into the pro plans.
[00:10:59] But yeah these actually
[00:11:00] this wasn't the list
[00:11:02] that I was thinking of so there's
[00:11:03] actually more than
[00:11:05] then
[00:11:07] what they listed here
[00:11:09] so I've got another thread on
[00:11:12] on that
[00:11:15] Twitter.
[00:11:16] No so this is the same one
[00:11:18] so there was other
[00:11:20] I don't know if it's included in
[00:11:22] this but there was other
[00:11:24] changes that they made.
[00:11:26] Okay Yeah so bulk field editing.
[00:11:28] So I don't know if you've noticed.
[00:11:30] Have you noticed that you can now
[00:11:32] if I can let's see if I can test this
[00:11:34] so I can actually if I hold down control
[00:11:37] you can actually highlight
[00:11:39] multiple field
[00:11:40] and then if you right click on it
[00:11:44] Yeah so I have the
[00:11:45] beginnings of this functionality.
[00:11:47] Mine does what yours does, it
[00:11:48] doesn't let me bulk do things yet
[00:11:51] but it lets me bulk select.
[00:11:52] So it's I think
[00:11:54] I think it's a two step process.
[00:11:57] Yeah, so what can you do?
[00:11:59] I don't think
[00:12:00] anything yet.
[00:12:02] I've seen it in another of my bases
[00:12:06] where it will bring up a
[00:12:09] little pop up over here
[00:12:11] to have the option
[00:12:13] to bulk change permissions.
[00:12:16] So the rollout is
[00:12:17] probably just not complete.
[00:12:19] I have the change in ui
[00:12:20] think the ui is universal,
[00:12:22] but I don't think
[00:12:24] I have the feature in my bases yet.
[00:12:27] Yeah.
[00:12:28] Yeah. The other change that
[00:12:31] yeah, it's kind of like this,
[00:12:33] so now they kind of group,
[00:12:35] they're they're sections based off of like
[00:12:39] the view type or the
[00:12:41] collaboration permission.
[00:12:44] It looks like they got rid of like
[00:12:47] that default section that used to be
[00:12:49] there. So before that when you
[00:12:51] create a new section,
[00:12:52] it would put everything
[00:12:53] into like a default
[00:12:56] section.
[00:12:57] Now, it looks like they kind of
[00:13:00] proof them based off of the few
[00:13:02] I believe they also
[00:13:03] when you click on this.
[00:13:05] Yeah. Now when you click on adding
[00:13:07] a new grid,
[00:13:08] you now have the option to
[00:13:10] specify if you want a
[00:13:12] collaborative or a personal
[00:13:13] or locked.
[00:13:15] Although this locked one,
[00:13:17] I think I mentioned in the slack
[00:13:20] community of
[00:13:21] you don't really want to start
[00:13:24] with a locked view
[00:13:25] because there's no point in
[00:13:27] locking it because you want to
[00:13:29] configure it first and then lock it.
[00:13:30] So that's kind of an odd
[00:13:32] configuration there.
[00:13:36] Anything else I've missed
[00:13:38] that they've added in these new updates?
[00:13:42] I think that's the bulk of it.
[00:13:44] Yeah, yeah,
[00:13:46] so I think you can tell they
[00:13:48] spend a lot of time
[00:13:49] obviously and just making
[00:13:50] onboarding and engaging
[00:13:52] with their functionality
[00:13:54] as easy as possible and I think
[00:13:56] the main thing
[00:13:57] and I think Kuovonne mentioned this
[00:14:00] in our community
[00:14:01] that you know the main thing
[00:14:02] that they're showing you here
[00:14:04] is that these options
[00:14:06] exist so maybe you don't need
[00:14:08] to use them right away but
[00:14:10] you now know that
[00:14:11] okay there is some level of
[00:14:13] of configuration.
[00:14:14] Now the question is
[00:14:15] how do you change that?
[00:14:16] So you have to come up to here
[00:14:18] and then you can change it
[00:14:19] up here once it's
[00:14:20] already configured but
[00:14:22] good starting point to get going.
[00:14:27] So lots of new functionality
[00:14:29] looks like even more coming,
[00:14:31] especially if you're
[00:14:32] an enterprise customer
[00:14:33] and hopefully those trickle down,
[00:14:36] I really am anxious to see the improved
[00:14:39] loading time and see
[00:14:41] how that trickles down
[00:14:44] into the pro and free plans
[00:14:48] there, so
[00:14:50] alright, moving on to the
[00:14:52] BuiltOnAir community, I want to,
[00:14:53] if anybody at Airtable is listening,
[00:14:57] Denali has been trying for weeks now to
[00:15:00] get a hold of enterprise sales,
[00:15:02] this isn't a good look,
[00:15:03] I don't know why sales
[00:15:04] people wouldn't
[00:15:05] be taking the call for somebody that
[00:15:09] Denali has been trying to reach out,
[00:15:12] I've seen her post in the Airtable forum
[00:15:14] she's posted in the BuiltOnAir forums.
[00:15:17] I also saw her post on Twitter begging
[00:15:20] the enterprise sales team
[00:15:21] to get in touch with her
[00:15:23] so that they can upgrade
[00:15:24] their account. So
[00:15:25] so if anybody has connections
[00:15:28] into the enterprise sales team
[00:15:30] at Airtable,
[00:15:31] please reach out to Denali
[00:15:35] and you can contact her
[00:15:38] or reach out to me
[00:15:40] shout out and try to help her.
[00:15:44] Alright, moving on
[00:15:45] to the Reddit community
[00:15:47] a couple of things posted on
[00:15:50] this community that I wanted to share.
[00:15:52] So this is pretty cool if you're using
[00:15:55] stripe, if you're taking payments
[00:15:58] for your product
[00:15:59] and you want to create a
[00:16:01] dashboard for those stripes sales
[00:16:04] check out
[00:16:06] what I actually don't know
[00:16:08] who this is, the sales guy.
[00:16:10] Check out this video that they posted,
[00:16:14] he made a video walking through his
[00:16:16] entire process
[00:16:17] and how to set it up.
[00:16:19] So great tutorial,
[00:16:20] even if you're not using
[00:16:21] stripe, you can kind of see
[00:16:23] a real life use case of somebody that's
[00:16:27] building a live dashboard with real data
[00:16:33] and so great walk through
[00:16:35] just a six minute video.
[00:16:36] I always like to see these
[00:16:38] examples of real life scenarios
[00:16:41] and check that out
[00:16:43] via the Reddit post
[00:16:45] In there. And then another one
[00:16:49] on
[00:16:50] posted on Reddit.
[00:16:52] Somebody was asking
[00:16:53] about a guide like this
[00:16:56] and whether you could build
[00:16:58] a style guide template
[00:17:00] and I see these
[00:17:02] quite a bit of like,
[00:17:03] could we build something amazing like
[00:17:06] this and you know,
[00:17:07] Airtable is not quite there yet
[00:17:09] to create like a fully
[00:17:11] dynamic,
[00:17:12] you know, even the new
[00:17:14] Interface Designer,
[00:17:15] you wouldn't be able to create an
[00:17:18] interface like this.
[00:17:19] That's pretty custom built.
[00:17:22] The timeline could get you close,
[00:17:24] but even then
[00:17:25] the timeline doesn't have like
[00:17:27] broken down by hour, it's not
[00:17:29] by hour. Yeah,
[00:17:32] so this is a pretty custom
[00:17:34] looking ui that Airtable
[00:17:36] is not quite there yet.
[00:17:38] You could build it custom
[00:17:40] and then pull the data from Airtable.
[00:17:43] You could definitely
[00:17:44] create the data that populates this
[00:17:46] and have the start and
[00:17:48] end times and all of that,
[00:17:50] you know, and everything
[00:17:51] that you would need to build this.
[00:17:54] But that would
[00:17:54] require pulling the data from,
[00:17:57] from the Api
[00:17:58] and I don't believe any
[00:18:01] third party tool like a softer or
[00:18:05] pori or stacker.
[00:18:06] I don't believe you could build something
[00:18:09] as custom as this and
[00:18:11] none do them outright. But the
[00:18:14] calendar I use for all of my apps
[00:18:16] fullcalendar.io which is a open source
[00:18:19] option. You could build that.
[00:18:23] You could build something like this?
[00:18:26] I mean I don't want to, but yes,
[00:18:28] with fullcalendar.io
[00:18:30] you totally could,
[00:18:31] you could do that.
[00:18:32] Yeah, but you'd be building it
[00:18:34] custom Yeah.
[00:18:34] Yeah. It would be a custom app.
[00:18:36] Like Justin was saying
[00:18:37] Yeah.
[00:18:38] Yeah. And it wouldn't be public facing.
[00:18:40] Yeah
[00:18:42] but you could yeah you could
[00:18:44] make it public.
[00:18:45] If you built it as an app inside of
[00:18:47] Airtable then you could
[00:18:48] you could do that as well.
[00:18:50] Yeah or you could pull it
[00:18:51] via the api and build it custom,
[00:18:54] you can do that.
[00:18:56] Yeah. So couple options there.
[00:18:58] Now I will also give a plug
[00:19:00] we have an integration
[00:19:02] actually have a client
[00:19:03] that actually is a
[00:19:06] media company and they run a tv
[00:19:10] business just like this
[00:19:13] and they've been doing
[00:19:15] a version of this in Google
[00:19:18] sheets
[00:19:19] and they're now looking
[00:19:21] to use On2Air product because we have an
[00:19:24] integration with Google sheets
[00:19:26] and you actually can build
[00:19:28] something like this. It does require
[00:19:31] scripting to get the data into a format
[00:19:34] that could work. But it doesn't
[00:19:36] require a custom app.
[00:19:38] So if you are doing something like this,
[00:19:40] get in touch with on2air.com
[00:19:42] and we can walk you through
[00:19:45] how you could potentially set that up.
[00:19:47] We'll be doing a use case
[00:19:49] on something similar to this.
[00:19:51] But this kind of grid layout,
[00:19:52] you actually can
[00:19:53] populate, it creates kind of a template
[00:19:55] that gets populated with Airtable data
[00:19:57] using our integration with Google sheets.
[00:20:00] So that's that's another approach
[00:20:03] that you could take. So
[00:20:05] but yeah, definitely,
[00:20:06] definitely not out of the box
[00:20:08] it's gonna require something
[00:20:09] else.
[00:20:10] So all right, moving on,
[00:20:14] let me see, my daughter messaged me
[00:20:18] another cool use case.
[00:20:20] Another example.
[00:20:22] I love these real life use cases of
[00:20:25] people using Airtable
[00:20:26] and then showing how
[00:20:28] they're building real working
[00:20:30] examples that they're using
[00:20:32] in their business.
[00:20:34] So this is from kwang if I'm
[00:20:36] saying your name right
[00:20:38] built a automation to
[00:20:41] populate their YouTube channel
[00:20:46] and he walks through,
[00:20:48] he created a video
[00:20:49] walking through exactly how everything
[00:20:52] is set up. It's a really good video.
[00:20:55] I watched it and showcases,
[00:20:58] I believe he's using Integromat
[00:21:01] and I think Zapier as well.
[00:21:03] I think there's certain things
[00:21:05] that only one of them could do.
[00:21:07] And so it did require both
[00:21:09] Integromat and Zapier,
[00:21:11] especially the posting to
[00:21:13] YouTube portion of the video,
[00:21:16] but he has basically an entire YouTube
[00:21:21] production process
[00:21:23] automated in YouTube
[00:21:24] and does some pretty cool stuff.
[00:21:27] So if you're in the video
[00:21:28] creation space
[00:21:29] and looking for a real life
[00:21:32] walkthrough of how you can
[00:21:34] populate and create YouTube channels,
[00:21:38] YouTube videos, and manage that whole
[00:21:41] process from Airtable.
[00:21:43] Check out this video.
[00:21:45] It's really cool.
[00:21:46] And it's actually similar
[00:21:48] in the BuiltOnAir with this video that
[00:21:52] or this channel.
[00:21:54] We actually automate a lot of
[00:21:56] our post production stuff.
[00:21:57] We take a different approach to him
[00:22:00] someday maybe I'll create a video on
[00:22:03] everything that goes into that.
[00:22:05] We use some other api's
[00:22:06] to automate that but again
[00:22:09] similar, very similar concept to this
[00:22:13] gentleman and
[00:22:15] but it's really cool to use Airtable
[00:22:18] and just automate a lot of this that
[00:22:20] normally would just be a lot of
[00:22:22] busywork and and time constraints.
[00:22:26] Alright. Going on,
[00:22:27] I think this is our last one.
[00:22:30] Actually we've already
[00:22:31] talked about this
[00:22:32] so this is just a Twitter thread
[00:22:34] from Airable,
[00:22:36] talking about some of the new
[00:22:38] admins announcements. So
[00:22:40] that is anything, anything I miss?
[00:22:43] Kamille,
[00:22:43] anything worth highlighting in the
[00:22:45] communities?
[00:22:46] I think that's about it.
[00:22:48] Yeah, very good.
[00:22:51] Okay quickly
[00:22:52] I'm gonna give a spotlight
[00:22:55] a shout out to
[00:22:57] On2Air, gonna bring up our
[00:22:59] as we're moving on.
[00:23:01] So On2Air is a primary
[00:23:03] sponsor of the BuiltOnAir
[00:23:05] community
[00:23:06] and it's an all in one toolkit
[00:23:08] to run your business.
[00:23:09] It's a suite of apps
[00:23:10] that do a variety of different tasks,
[00:23:12] from backing up your data
[00:23:15] to the cloud to,
[00:23:16] making it easier to interact
[00:23:19] with your data
[00:23:20] and form automations and whatnot.
[00:23:22] So check out on2air.com
[00:23:24] for all your Airtable business needs
[00:23:27] and for today's spotlight
[00:23:30] I'm going to check out
[00:23:32] our
[00:23:34] soon to be released
[00:23:35] I think on last week's video
[00:23:37] I said it would be released
[00:23:38] last week were in the queue
[00:23:41] for Airtable to push out
[00:23:43] a new version of our
[00:23:45] Amplify product.
[00:23:46] So if you watched last week's
[00:23:48] video and was wondering
[00:23:49] where it's at,
[00:23:51] it is still not live.
[00:23:52] I'm waiting on Airtable to
[00:23:54] pull the trigger and push
[00:23:56] it live. Hopefully this week,
[00:23:58] although with this week
[00:24:00] being a holiday week
[00:24:01] with Thanksgiving
[00:24:03] might not go out this week.
[00:24:04] So we'll see when this goes live.
[00:24:07] But I wanted to showcase
[00:24:09] a new feature
[00:24:10] that got added in this new
[00:24:13] version that will be coming out,
[00:24:15] which is a highly requested
[00:24:16] feature I know
[00:24:17] in talking to clients
[00:24:19] that are either law firms
[00:24:21] or accounting firms,
[00:24:22] any or medical firms,
[00:24:26] if you're dealing with a lot of PDFs
[00:24:28] and you need to highlight
[00:24:30] and annotate your
[00:24:31] pdf. We've incorporated
[00:24:33] annotations into our pdf viewer
[00:24:37] through the use of a third party
[00:24:40] annotation service called hypothesis
[00:24:43] and it's actually free to use.
[00:24:45] So if you check out
[00:24:47] hypothesis and we have the
[00:24:48] links in here,
[00:24:49] it will if it's configurable to turn on,
[00:24:52] you can turn it on or off if you want
[00:24:54] annotations or not,
[00:24:56] but when it's on
[00:24:57] and we have that link there
[00:24:59] to the hypothesis website,
[00:25:01] it will bring up a
[00:25:02] sidebar
[00:25:04] that will show you
[00:25:06] the ability to annotate,
[00:25:08] so you can actually highlight
[00:25:10] things and annotate and add a comment
[00:25:15] through there
[00:25:17] and then it will save
[00:25:18] and you can post it into your test group
[00:25:21] and then it will be available
[00:25:24] to every other user
[00:25:25] in your team that's
[00:25:27] associated with this test group.
[00:25:29] And so a very powerful way to
[00:25:32] annotate your PDFs
[00:25:34] and make comments and make
[00:25:36] them stick so that they exist
[00:25:39] long term and what not. So
[00:25:42] if you are in need of pdf annotations,
[00:25:45] check out On2Air Amplify and the soon
[00:25:48] to be released
[00:25:49] version will have
[00:25:52] annotations as part of that release,
[00:25:55] hopefully coming soon
[00:25:57] to an app store near your Airtable.
[00:26:00] Yeah,
[00:26:01] very good.
[00:26:02] Now we're gonna move on
[00:26:04] to our Field Focus and Kamille,
[00:26:06] I will share your screen and take it away.
[00:26:11] Okay. I made a base for the first time
[00:26:15] in forever and put it on the
[00:26:17] Airtable universe and
[00:26:20] the whole sort of purpose around it
[00:26:23] was to help make a time based reporting
[00:26:26] easier.
[00:26:27] So I've noticed a lot of people
[00:26:30] need to come up with reports for
[00:26:33] everything that came out in November.
[00:26:35] All of my records from November or all of
[00:26:37] my records from quarter 4, 2021
[00:26:39] or all records from 2021 in general
[00:26:42] and you can set up views to do this
[00:26:46] and then print the views that way.
[00:26:48] But that's less flexible
[00:26:50] and if you needed to
[00:26:51] run
[00:26:54] you know, some calculations on the data,
[00:26:56] like the total number of sales and you
[00:26:58] wanted to keep a running log of that.
[00:27:00] It's kind of difficult unless you start
[00:27:01] linking records together
[00:27:04] and keep a reports table.
[00:27:07] So I built a fairly simple
[00:27:09] implementation that does that
[00:27:11] and I put that on the Airtable Universe.
[00:27:13] It relies on
[00:27:15] one automation,
[00:27:16] the automations don't get copied over
[00:27:20] when you post to the
[00:27:23] universe, so I'm going to explain
[00:27:25] what they are when we get there.
[00:27:27] So
[00:27:28] to start off, it's a very simple sort of
[00:27:33] use case that I have built out
[00:27:36] where I have, you know,
[00:27:38] some records that are
[00:27:40] associated with a particular date,
[00:27:43] think of them as transactions.
[00:27:46] So on 12 November I had a $25 transaction
[00:27:51] if I wanted to know every,
[00:27:53] you know the total of sales
[00:27:55] that they had done in
[00:27:57] November,
[00:27:59] you know,
[00:28:00] I would want to have a report that
[00:28:03] pulls all of the relevant records
[00:28:05] in together
[00:28:06] and so what I did was
[00:28:08] I made a somewhat complicated formula,
[00:28:11] except it's not that complicated.
[00:28:13] Just took a little bit of
[00:28:16] thinking through to identify precisely
[00:28:19] what the formula needed to be.
[00:28:21] So it makes use of date time format,
[00:28:23] which I think most people if you've dealt
[00:28:26] with formulas and dates before
[00:28:27] you're familiar with date time format,
[00:28:29] but it actually,
[00:28:30] instead of having it output one format,
[00:28:34] it outputs every
[00:28:35] format I would want it to be
[00:28:36] depending on the number
[00:28:38] or the types of reports
[00:28:39] that I want. So
[00:28:42] if I take a look at my reports table,
[00:28:44] you can kind of see based on the name,
[00:28:46] the types of reports that I'm
[00:28:48] reporting on.
[00:28:49] So I have the year,
[00:28:50] I have the quarter,
[00:28:51] I have the month
[00:28:52] and I have the week the numerical week
[00:28:54] in the year.
[00:28:55] Going back to my
[00:28:59] log table transactions,
[00:29:01] you can see it's converting
[00:29:03] the 12th of November into
[00:29:05] all of the relevant time periods
[00:29:08] that it falls under.
[00:29:09] So the year of 2021 the
[00:29:10] quarter four of 2021
[00:29:13] 11th month of 2021
[00:29:15] the 46th week of 2021.
[00:29:17] This formula can be adjusted
[00:29:20] based on the types of reports
[00:29:22] you wanted to do
[00:29:23] if you only needed year.
[00:29:25] This is much simpler.
[00:29:26] If you only needed week,
[00:29:27] this is much simpler.
[00:29:28] But if you needed
[00:29:29] an array of different types of reports,
[00:29:32] this is what this formula is doing.
[00:29:35] The reason why there's a bunch
[00:29:37] of substitutes in here
[00:29:38] is because I've used
[00:29:40] symbols
[00:29:42] to
[00:29:43] separate out.
[00:29:46] I would add an identifier
[00:29:48] of what the type of report is.
[00:29:50] So if we take a look
[00:29:50] at this one here
[00:29:52] and hopefully
[00:29:53] this is large enough on my screen
[00:29:57] going to zoom in.
[00:29:58] So you'll see yyyy which is the full year
[00:30:02] dash at the symbol q dash uppercase Q.
[00:30:05] The reason why it's doing that is
[00:30:08] because if I
[00:30:09] said
[00:30:10] quarter there, the word quarter,
[00:30:13] the way date time format works
[00:30:16] is it takes letters as variables
[00:30:19] for a date time
[00:30:20] format.
[00:30:21] So if I tried writing in quarter
[00:30:23] where this queue is it would
[00:30:26] it wouldn't come out the way I wanted.
[00:30:29] So I have to sort of introduce a new step
[00:30:31] in here
[00:30:32] and then use a switch formula
[00:30:34] or a substitute formula rather to replace
[00:30:37] that Q with the actual word quarter
[00:30:39] in the final result.
[00:30:40] The final result is this very long string
[00:30:43] and I recognize that that was going to
[00:30:46] be difficult for people to figure out.
[00:30:50] So I wrote a script
[00:30:52] that sort of helps you
[00:30:54] write the formulas
[00:30:55] that you need in order to
[00:31:00] come up with every
[00:31:02] relevant formula in this space. So
[00:31:04] for me, I'm in Los Angeles,
[00:31:07] so my weeks start on a Sunday,
[00:31:09] but if you wanted to change this
[00:31:11] and say include weeks
[00:31:12] as a reporting variable,
[00:31:14] but have weeks start on a Monday,
[00:31:16] you would
[00:31:17] adjust your settings for the script,
[00:31:20] click run and then it will output
[00:31:22] the proper formula for you.
[00:31:24] And then you'll see there's
[00:31:26] a couple more formulas,
[00:31:28] most of them are all of
[00:31:29] them are in the other table.
[00:31:31] So I'll do a quick rundown
[00:31:32] of what those are doing.
[00:31:35] But before I get those,
[00:31:38] before I get there,
[00:31:39] that one automation,
[00:31:41] all it's doing is copying this value
[00:31:43] into this field.
[00:31:45] This field is the link to the reports.
[00:31:47] So it's really
[00:31:49] simple the actual automation of it.
[00:31:51] The difficult piece was all of the
[00:31:53] various formulas so
[00:31:56] you see
[00:31:58] once you copy an array
[00:32:00] into a link to another record field type
[00:32:02] it creates the
[00:32:03] number of
[00:32:05] records that are necessary.
[00:32:07] So all of the individual time
[00:32:09] periods are their own
[00:32:10] record. And then I have a series
[00:32:13] of fields that are interpreting
[00:32:16] This 2021 month 10
[00:32:18] into the start and end time of
[00:32:22] what that time period is.
[00:32:24] This is also somewhat complicated. So I'll
[00:32:30] friendly name is actually not
[00:32:32] necessary. So
[00:32:35] I have a few formulas
[00:32:36] that are extracting out of the name
[00:32:39] what the time period
[00:32:40] is or the time unit,
[00:32:42] year, quarter, month, week.
[00:32:44] And then I have another formula that is
[00:32:47] sort of
[00:32:48] during the reverse
[00:32:50] where it's taking the time period out of
[00:32:53] the full string.
[00:32:55] one more formula that is converting
[00:33:00] this
[00:33:02] into this using this date time format. So
[00:33:05] and then from there
[00:33:07] period starts and period end
[00:33:10] are again interpreting
[00:33:12] this into a start and end time.
[00:33:15] The simplest formula
[00:33:17] is period end where it's
[00:33:18] just taking whatever the start is
[00:33:21] plus one time unit
[00:33:24] And then minus one day.
[00:33:25] So no matter what time period
[00:33:27] you're dealing with year,
[00:33:28] month, week,
[00:33:29] if you add one year
[00:33:31] to the start of it and then
[00:33:34] subtract one day,
[00:33:35] you'll get the end of that year,
[00:33:37] same thing with week, month, quarter,
[00:33:39] so simplest formula that probably won't
[00:33:42] need to be adjusted
[00:33:43] no matter what changes you
[00:33:44] want to make to this base
[00:33:45] period start is also kind of
[00:33:48] simple and again
[00:33:52] I knew the formulas
[00:33:53] would be the hardest part,
[00:33:54] so I wrote a script to write the
[00:33:55] formulas for you.
[00:33:57] If we sort of look at all of them lined up
[00:34:02] period start again is just parsing out
[00:34:05] what one of the formatted fields are.
[00:34:09] It involves rejects replace to sort of
[00:34:15] have a universal conversion.
[00:34:17] If that makes sense
[00:34:19] of how I've formatted the primary
[00:34:23] primary field
[00:34:24] if you take this base
[00:34:25] and adapted for your needs and let's say
[00:34:28] you don't want your primary field,
[00:34:30] we format it like this,
[00:34:32] the base is going to be entirely
[00:34:34] different because it's a,
[00:34:36] you know, the formulas are very
[00:34:38] reliant on everything
[00:34:40] sort of being in this
[00:34:42] format, whatever the year is,
[00:34:44] whatever the time unit is,
[00:34:46] dash and then the
[00:34:48] relevant number.
[00:34:50] If it's not in that format, it's
[00:34:52] these formulas are going to panic
[00:34:53] and you have to rewrite them on your own
[00:34:55] but as far as I know it's
[00:34:58] more or less foolproof.
[00:35:01] I know that's setting myself up
[00:35:03] for disaster
[00:35:04] but I've done a lot of testing and
[00:35:06] I haven't as long as you feed it,
[00:35:08] actual dates,
[00:35:09] it should work
[00:35:10] and then just as an example
[00:35:12] of what you could do
[00:35:14] now that
[00:35:15] each reporting period is its own
[00:35:18] record if you had page designer
[00:35:21] or document or
[00:35:22] you know, all of the other ones
[00:35:25] that allow you to have pdf's of
[00:35:28] pdf's of records
[00:35:30] that you can print out and export.
[00:35:34] because they are linked,
[00:35:35] you could include a table in them
[00:35:37] and then list them
[00:35:38] out so you can print them all
[00:35:40] on one sheet
[00:35:40] that is nicely reported and you could
[00:35:42] sum the total of them all
[00:35:44] and the number of records
[00:35:46] etcetera.
[00:35:47] So if you go forward in time
[00:35:50] you can see it's changing within the
[00:35:53] types of records
[00:35:54] that fall into the relevant
[00:35:56] reporting period.
[00:35:59] That's impressive.
[00:36:01] That is pretty cool.
[00:36:03] It's all formulas and it kind of sucks
[00:36:06] that the automation doesn't come in
[00:36:08] because this base actually has a few other
[00:36:10] automations that are not relevant to the
[00:36:14] use case I just described.
[00:36:16] But it does do stuff like
[00:36:17] if you wanted to fake an
[00:36:18] auto number which I've covered on
[00:36:20] this show before,
[00:36:21] it includes those automationS
[00:36:23] but they're not in the universe.
[00:36:25] So I mean that kind of sucks but
[00:36:29] Auto report
[00:36:30] is the one that's relevant to this.
[00:36:32] And literally all it's doing is
[00:36:34] is copying
[00:36:35] the value of
[00:36:38] that one long formula string
[00:36:40] into the link to another record field.
[00:36:43] And that's it.
[00:36:44] Gotcha.
[00:36:46] Very cool. So this is very useful for
[00:36:51] financial reporting
[00:36:53] or any any really kind of
[00:36:55] date based reporting,
[00:36:57] keep track out of history.
[00:36:59] I see it being asked a lot
[00:37:01] and so I wanted to make
[00:37:02] something that kind of sets
[00:37:04] it all up for you.
[00:37:05] So if you get it from the universe,
[00:37:08] it should come with the
[00:37:11] yeah, it will come in
[00:37:12] with the script app.
[00:37:14] So even, I mean the formulas are
[00:37:16] going to be there,
[00:37:17] but if you need help writing
[00:37:18] your own variation of the
[00:37:19] formula to either
[00:37:21] add or remove time periods,
[00:37:24] the script will come in with it
[00:37:27] as well. So you could use that,
[00:37:29] the one time period
[00:37:31] I didn't figure out was
[00:37:33] century and I don't want your all on
[00:37:35] your own.
[00:37:37] Nice. That is a cool trick though.
[00:37:40] The one to add the full duration and then
[00:37:43] subtract one
[00:37:45] to get the lap the end period,
[00:37:47] end period is to
[00:37:50] one more time.
[00:37:51] It's whatever the start is plus one,
[00:37:54] whatever the time unit is,
[00:37:55] it really doesn't matter
[00:37:57] the time unit. So from
[00:37:59] 2021 January 1st, 2021 at a whole year.
[00:38:03] So 2022 January 1st and then minus one
[00:38:07] day, that would be
[00:38:08] the 31st of December, 2021.
[00:38:11] works for any time period.
[00:38:12] Yeah, like Google sheets
[00:38:15] and excel have a period in function.
[00:38:17] I think Airtable does not,
[00:38:19] so that's how you implement it.
[00:38:22] You have to nest to
[00:38:23] date adds together.
[00:38:24] Yeah,
[00:38:26] awesome. Very cool Kamille
[00:38:28] and we'll have a link to the universe
[00:38:31] example, so you can try it out
[00:38:33] and play with it. And
[00:38:35] even just as a learning experience
[00:38:38] to check out the formulas and see how
[00:38:40] everything's
[00:38:41] working. So awesome,
[00:38:42] thank you for sharing that.
[00:38:45] go back here
[00:38:47] and we are now going to
[00:38:49] Meet the Creators. So, in this segment,
[00:38:53] Zoltan, we just wanna
[00:38:54] get to know a little bit about you,
[00:38:57] about your story,
[00:38:58] interested to hear how you
[00:39:01] found Airtable and
[00:39:03] maybe give us some some
[00:39:05] background on previous experiences
[00:39:08] that you've had and
[00:39:10] what's your story,
[00:39:12] yep, Thank you.
[00:39:13] Thanks for thanks for having me on here.
[00:39:16] Yeah, so let's start with a
[00:39:18] little personal background.
[00:39:19] So I think it makes
[00:39:20] sense. I'm a nontechnical builder,
[00:39:25] maker, which I think auto
[00:39:29] automatically draws me to
[00:39:31] some tools and platforms that are,
[00:39:33] that are built for
[00:39:34] non technical people. But
[00:39:35] my story or our story
[00:39:37] with True Source is a little
[00:39:40] it's a, it's a little peculiar,
[00:39:42] I would say here,
[00:39:43] because we're not necessarily
[00:39:44] building something on top of Airtable,
[00:39:47] although we are, but our,
[00:39:48] our tool requires technical
[00:39:51] technical knowledge on our side.
[00:39:55] So we're not, we're not non tech,
[00:39:56] we're not only
[00:39:57] non technical builders here.
[00:39:59] But my background.
[00:40:01] So I'm originally from Hungary,
[00:40:04] one of the highlights of my career,
[00:40:06] I founded and led the Google office in
[00:40:08] Hungary. This is back in historical times,
[00:40:12] like beginning of the of the century
[00:40:15] that Kamille is not tracking.
[00:40:20] And then on then I moved on
[00:40:22] and worked in marketplaces
[00:40:24] one of the largest
[00:40:26] marketplace operators in the world.
[00:40:28] They're currently called Aventa they
[00:40:30] recently acquired Ebay classifieds
[00:40:33] last year
[00:40:34] and they operate marketplaces
[00:40:36] I think around 15 countries.
[00:40:38] These these days they used
[00:40:39] to be up to like 25 at one point
[00:40:42] I was the person running
[00:40:44] product marketing analytics
[00:40:47] and innovation on a
[00:40:48] global level based out of Barcelona
[00:40:51] and then moved to California
[00:40:52] about six years ago,
[00:40:54] I worked in a B2B Saas
[00:40:55] startup that I had a small exit out of
[00:40:58] and about a year ago I met my co
[00:41:01] founder,
[00:41:02] his name is Edward,
[00:41:04] He's my technical co founder
[00:41:06] and given our background,
[00:41:08] he's also ex Google,
[00:41:10] but he's on the technical side.
[00:41:12] He worked in the machine
[00:41:13] learning team of Google
[00:41:15] back when machine learning
[00:41:18] was not a sexy thing.
[00:41:19] And so basically we were
[00:41:22] kind of like
[00:41:24] and he's like super
[00:41:27] into data.
[00:41:28] So we were kind of drawn into
[00:41:31] this space of data and and and non
[00:41:34] technical field and
[00:41:37] you know, we were kind of iterating
[00:41:39] and I would say co founder dating
[00:41:40] for a while
[00:41:41] before we kind of figured out
[00:41:44] the area what's going to be the product
[00:41:47] and the and the problem space
[00:41:48] that we're building for
[00:41:50] and this is how we kind of
[00:41:51] came to like Airtable
[00:41:53] and the related platforms that actually do
[00:41:57] host
[00:41:58] data or serve as kind of databases for
[00:42:03] for not necessarily technical people.
[00:42:05] And you know, smaller,
[00:42:06] smaller teams, smaller projects.
[00:42:09] And we were looking at
[00:42:11] some of the problems
[00:42:13] that creators and makers are
[00:42:15] facing and we really have discovered that
[00:42:21] it's really difficult and you know,
[00:42:24] we you just discussed about the interface
[00:42:26] designer here.
[00:42:27] But when we started building there,
[00:42:31] there was really not a
[00:42:33] simple way to make
[00:42:36] your bases, make your Google sheets
[00:42:38] or even worse,
[00:42:40] make your CSV files available,
[00:42:41] viewable
[00:42:44] filterable, editable
[00:42:46] and publishable and even more difficult is
[00:42:50] monetizable by anybody on the internet.
[00:42:53] So that's how actually
[00:42:55] True Source was born
[00:42:57] with that thought,
[00:42:59] but I'll kind of like stop here
[00:43:01] with the personal introduction.
[00:43:04] Very cool.
[00:43:05] And yeah.
[00:43:06] And you're based out in
[00:43:07] Kamille's neck of the world.
[00:43:09] You're out in L. A.
[00:43:11] I am.
[00:43:12] Our company is actually fully remote.
[00:43:17] So Okay. Yeah. So yeah,
[00:43:20] I'm in L. A.
[00:43:21] Edward, my co founder's in Palo Alto.
[00:43:25] And we have team
[00:43:27] team members basically
[00:43:28] all throughout the US.
[00:43:30] So we're like fully remote.
[00:43:32] We're a post Covid organization.
[00:43:34] I would, I would call ourselves.
[00:43:36] Yeah. Yeah,
[00:43:38] awesome. So with True Source
[00:43:41] kind of the mission
[00:43:43] is to allow data builders
[00:43:46] to monetize and share their data and
[00:43:51] yeah, it's
[00:43:53] it's basically to empower creators
[00:43:56] to market and monetize their
[00:43:59] data in a way
[00:44:00] that was not possible before.
[00:44:02] And we're kind of
[00:44:03] doubling down on data.
[00:44:05] So we are aware that there
[00:44:08] are some other, you know, visual builders,
[00:44:10] website builders
[00:44:12] or even even some other builder tools
[00:44:15] even mentioned on today's podcast before,
[00:44:20] that you can build
[00:44:23] applications based on Airtable
[00:44:26] or based on even Google sheets or
[00:44:29] some other data hosting services.
[00:44:32] But we make it super simple
[00:44:35] and some of the things that we do like
[00:44:39] multiple bases, multiple tables
[00:44:42] nested
[00:44:43] linked together are super difficult if
[00:44:46] not impossible to build with
[00:44:49] any other platform
[00:44:51] Awesome.
[00:44:52] And you're gonna,
[00:44:54] you're gonna show us how
[00:44:55] the how to set that up here in a
[00:44:57] second.
[00:44:58] Yes, I will show some examples.
[00:45:01] I will show sneak peeks into the,
[00:45:05] into the creator interface.
[00:45:07] I can't show the full
[00:45:09] interface right now because
[00:45:11] we're pre launch,
[00:45:12] so we're still building it.
[00:45:14] We have
[00:45:14] we have actually a
[00:45:16] working products or our back end
[00:45:19] functions completely,
[00:45:20] but as I've said,
[00:45:21] we're still building the front end and
[00:45:23] yeah, I can give sneak peeks,
[00:45:26] but yeah, I can't show the whole
[00:45:28] working process. But what is
[00:45:33] What is interesting is that
[00:45:35] you know the setup process
[00:45:36] we're designing it to
[00:45:38] be super simple.
[00:45:39] So it will not take more
[00:45:41] than 30 seconds to set up
[00:45:42] what we call a data product,
[00:45:44] it's basically a data application.
[00:45:46] So an application,
[00:45:48] a web application based on
[00:45:49] some sort of data set or
[00:45:51] or database.
[00:45:53] We're designing the whole process
[00:45:55] to be not longer than 30 seconds.
[00:45:58] Awesome.
[00:45:59] Cool. Why don't you
[00:46:01] start to share your screen
[00:46:03] and in the meantime I'm going
[00:46:05] to do a final spotlight on our sponsor
[00:46:08] while you get your screen ready to
[00:46:10] share.
[00:46:11] And we're gonna stick with On2Air Amplify
[00:46:15] because that's a big launch coming
[00:46:17] out
[00:46:18] soon any day like I mentioned before.
[00:46:23] go to my
[00:46:25] example here.
[00:46:26] So for this one,
[00:46:28] just a quick overview
[00:46:30] if you've used amplify,
[00:46:32] you know, it's kind of a collection
[00:46:35] of views that you can use to go deep into
[00:46:37] your data.
[00:46:38] There is some similarities
[00:46:40] with the Interface Designer.
[00:46:42] These are deep into a record level
[00:46:44] but they also extend your data to add
[00:46:47] different types of ways to view
[00:46:49] your data that
[00:46:50] Airtable doesn't currently
[00:46:51] have.
[00:46:52] And so we have nine different
[00:46:54] block views that you can use to interact
[00:46:57] with your data.
[00:46:58] Either looking at linked records,
[00:47:02] previewing your data or
[00:47:04] editing your content inside your data
[00:47:07] through a markdown editor.
[00:47:09] If you have markdown data in html. Editor.
[00:47:12] JSON editor or Google docs
[00:47:14] if you're linked to google doc
[00:47:17] url's
[00:47:17] and then we also added a
[00:47:19] very simple text editor.
[00:47:21] So this is our new
[00:47:22] editor and sometimes we found
[00:47:24] that you just need
[00:47:26] a good text editor to be
[00:47:28] looking at data,
[00:47:29] especially if you have a lot of data
[00:47:31] and it's just clean text,
[00:47:33] it's not markdown or html.
[00:47:35] You can use this text editor
[00:47:38] to keep track and it's just very simple
[00:47:41] interface it shows you the line numbers,
[00:47:43] you can also keep track of your word
[00:47:46] counts, you can also download it
[00:47:48] as a text file if needed.
[00:47:50] So a very simple text
[00:47:51] editor for interacting with
[00:47:54] your record data.
[00:47:56] And so that's the latest
[00:47:59] block view that's been added to
[00:48:01] the new release that's coming out soon.
[00:48:04] So check it out On2Air Amplify.
[00:48:06] Check out all of the block
[00:48:08] views and and feel
[00:48:09] free to let us know
[00:48:10] if there's a block view
[00:48:12] that you want to see added to it.
[00:48:14] So with that we will
[00:48:17] finish up here,
[00:48:20] get back to my screen shots.
[00:48:27] And for this final segment
[00:48:29] we'll do as part of the App a Day
[00:48:32] and I'm missing an
[00:48:33] e there for True Source
[00:48:35] I'll fix that post production
[00:48:37] and I will share your screen
[00:48:39] and then all right, go for it,
[00:48:43] yep. Thank you.
[00:48:44] So yeah, so first of all
[00:48:46] I just like to guide you through
[00:48:48] our landing page. So as you can see here,
[00:48:52] we're actually
[00:48:53] we're prelaunch
[00:48:54] so we have a waitlist.
[00:48:56] So anybody listening
[00:48:58] to, you know, you're interested
[00:49:00] or you're intrigued by what I'm showing.
[00:49:02] Just, you know,
[00:49:03] feel free to go to
[00:49:04] TrueSource.io and you can join our
[00:49:05] wait list.
[00:49:06] Here's just a sample screenshot
[00:49:09] of two of our screens that,
[00:49:11] you know, something like a data product.
[00:49:14] How we imagine it,
[00:49:15] how you can set it up.
[00:49:17] This is what we call a grid view
[00:49:19] of a data product. So here you can see my
[00:49:21] mouse right? Yes. Roaming around.
[00:49:24] So here you have a banner image,
[00:49:27] what we call a banner image
[00:49:28] and kind of a marketing place
[00:49:30] or marketing area
[00:49:31] where you can
[00:49:33] kind of tease your users.
[00:49:35] So the end consumers of your data products
[00:49:38] that you set up
[00:49:39] and then you have areas
[00:49:41] for links basically,
[00:49:42] and then your data,
[00:49:44] which in this case is in a grid view.
[00:49:47] So it's a nice visual
[00:49:49] representation of your data,
[00:49:52] you can see that,
[00:49:53] you know, you can show images,
[00:49:55] logos, whatever the type of our
[00:49:57] sort of data you're you're working with
[00:50:00] and I will show examples of
[00:50:03] the table views that we're also
[00:50:06] launching with,
[00:50:07] so by default
[00:50:07] where we're gonna be launching
[00:50:09] with these these
[00:50:09] these two views.
[00:50:11] So yeah as I mentioned
[00:50:13] besides Airtable, TrueSource
[00:50:16] works with Google sheets or
[00:50:18] or just simple CSV files.
[00:50:20] One important thing is that it's
[00:50:24] 100% free to use,
[00:50:25] so setting up your data products
[00:50:29] however big they are and
[00:50:31] you know there's always
[00:50:33] some small text, small print,
[00:50:35] legal disclaimer there.
[00:50:38] So yeah we won't be able to
[00:50:42] host like
[00:50:43] 1000 terabytes
[00:50:44] but within normal limits,
[00:50:47] I would say that it's free to
[00:50:49] use
[00:50:50] with huge data sets as well.
[00:50:53] We have integrated payments
[00:50:55] which is kind of a feature
[00:50:57] that a lot of our early
[00:50:58] creators that we've spoke with
[00:51:01] require and you know that
[00:51:02] was kind of a pin
[00:51:03] point
[00:51:04] on how to monetize
[00:51:05] and you know why the process is
[00:51:07] broken and you have to go
[00:51:08] through like different steps
[00:51:10] especially for the consumers.
[00:51:12] So everything is
[00:51:13] integrated within TrueSource
[00:51:17] Customization as I've said.
[00:51:20] It's always kind of a give or
[00:51:24] take and you know what
[00:51:26] what we've just seen on Airtable,
[00:51:28] you know,
[00:51:28] it's like how much
[00:51:30] you want to you want to go
[00:51:32] towards customization and how
[00:51:34] much you want to simplify the process.
[00:51:37] So as an early stage tool
[00:51:39] where we're conducting interviews
[00:51:41] and we're trying to
[00:51:44] make the process fit
[00:51:46] and make the designs fit
[00:51:48] as many use cases as
[00:51:50] possible at the same time.
[00:51:53] Keeping it super simple.
[00:51:55] So the 3o second rule will apply
[00:51:57] and you know,
[00:51:58] even a more complex data product
[00:52:00] we believe should not take more
[00:52:01] than five minutes to set up
[00:52:04] and obviously it's no coding
[00:52:07] so it's a visual builder.
[00:52:09] And what's very interesting is
[00:52:12] that we will allow our
[00:52:14] creators to connect to
[00:52:16] other creators.
[00:52:17] So basically you can build on
[00:52:20] top of some other creators data
[00:52:22] products.
[00:52:23] This is coming
[00:52:25] so this will be built in by the launch,
[00:52:33] but obviously as there will be more
[00:52:35] and more data products on our platform,
[00:52:37] this will be more and more
[00:52:38] useful and valuable
[00:52:40] to our creators as they will be
[00:52:41] able to use data sets,
[00:52:43] which other data creators
[00:52:46] are okay to share publicly.
[00:52:48] And build on top of those
[00:52:50] data products. And the value creation
[00:52:52] so how which is which is
[00:52:55] I think I can talk about
[00:52:57] it here as I said,
[00:52:58] it's free to use.
[00:53:00] So it's like okay
[00:53:01] but how do you guys make money is
[00:53:03] whenever you monetize your product
[00:53:05] we take a small cut
[00:53:06] from the from the revenue
[00:53:08] that you make
[00:53:09] and out of that out of our portion
[00:53:12] we actually reserve a portion for co
[00:53:15] creators.
[00:53:16] So even if you're
[00:53:17] uploading the data product and creating a
[00:53:19] data product that's not monetized
[00:53:21] and I will show you an example of that.
[00:53:23] You can still make money
[00:53:25] on the platform if somebody else monetizes
[00:53:27] that data that you're setting up.
[00:53:30] This is just a sample screen
[00:53:32] of you know like have monetization
[00:53:34] is gonna look
[00:53:34] like
[00:53:35] again about the connections.
[00:53:38] So you you see here
[00:53:39] a couple of examples like
[00:53:41] public data sets
[00:53:42] that you can actually
[00:53:43] upload to TrueSource
[00:53:45] and if you do that
[00:53:46] and you maintain it
[00:53:48] and you clean it, you can actually make
[00:53:50] money as a creator
[00:53:51] even though you might not
[00:53:53] be directly monetizing it.
[00:53:55] So real quick quick question.
[00:53:57] So I think it was in the above section.
[00:54:00] So if you have data,
[00:54:02] if you're a data creator
[00:54:03] you can sell it on a subscription
[00:54:05] basis or one time only
[00:54:07] looked like you had either option.
[00:54:10] Yeah. So basically
[00:54:11] monetization options
[00:54:13] are totally up to the creator.
[00:54:15] So some of our early creators
[00:54:17] and again I will show one example of
[00:54:20] that in the next couple of minutes
[00:54:23] uses log in requirements.
[00:54:26] So basically they are
[00:54:28] capturing user names,
[00:54:30] emails,
[00:54:32] to access data.
[00:54:33] So it's kind of a lead magnet.
[00:54:35] The Truesource works for them
[00:54:37] as a lead capture mechanism or tool.
[00:54:40] While as some other creators
[00:54:42] have set up their data products
[00:54:44] with direct monetization and when you do
[00:54:46] that you can do a one time fee,
[00:54:50] one time access fee
[00:54:51] or you can do a monthly subscription
[00:54:53] if you're maintaining.
[00:54:54] And updating your data set.
[00:54:57] We also provide
[00:55:01] user and access full user
[00:55:03] and access management
[00:55:05] including notification
[00:55:06] alerts and notifications.
[00:55:08] So basically when you update
[00:55:09] your data you can
[00:55:10] send out notifications to your users
[00:55:13] so that they will know why
[00:55:15] they're paying that
[00:55:16] monthly subscription free for
[00:55:18] and you know they're just
[00:55:20] the value created by the creator
[00:55:23] is always clear
[00:55:25] to the consumer
[00:55:26] who is in the end at the end of the day
[00:55:28] paying for the data
[00:55:29] product.
[00:55:30] And as a creator you can set up,
[00:55:33] you know, rows or columns
[00:55:35] that you want to hide
[00:55:36] or you want to ask for extra payment for.
[00:55:41] So the creator has total control
[00:55:45] over their data set and how they wanna
[00:55:47] make it available.
[00:55:49] Also download options
[00:55:51] so that load can can be
[00:55:54] enabled or can be disabled
[00:55:56] totally up to the to the creator
[00:55:58] because obviously in
[00:55:59] the data space
[00:56:00] download is a
[00:56:04] it's a nice option
[00:56:06] and a threat at the same time
[00:56:08] I would say for
[00:56:09] many creators who are working with
[00:56:12] and valuable data sets.
[00:56:14] Yeah, for sure.
[00:56:17] So yeah some more visualization
[00:56:20] options here and then I can I guess I
[00:56:23] can just jump into some of the
[00:56:25] some of the data products
[00:56:27] that have already been
[00:56:28] created on our platform
[00:56:29] even though as I've said,
[00:56:31] we're kind of pre launch at
[00:56:33] this point.
[00:56:34] So, so this data product
[00:56:36] actually is linked from our landing page
[00:56:39] as well.
[00:56:40] So everybody can check it out.
[00:56:42] This is kind of an Asian crunch base.
[00:56:44] So if you know crunch base,
[00:56:46] that's it's kind of a
[00:56:47] data product around startups
[00:56:49] and funding and and investors
[00:56:52] into the startup ecosystem.
[00:56:55] And this creator
[00:56:56] is actually putting together
[00:56:58] a data product on specifically
[00:57:00] Asian companies.
[00:57:02] So as I scroll down,
[00:57:05] you see, this is a tabular format
[00:57:08] data product and the filters which I
[00:57:11] haven't mentioned
[00:57:13] are actually auto created.
[00:57:15] So you see that these
[00:57:17] filters, you know,
[00:57:18] there's a date filter,
[00:57:19] there's a country filter.
[00:57:21] And all of these are auto created
[00:57:24] based on the type of data.
[00:57:26] So if there was geo data
[00:57:27] here actually the countries could it could
[00:57:30] have been shown as a map.
[00:57:33] But when we discover
[00:57:34] or when we realized
[00:57:36] that there's a geo
[00:57:38] data in the data set that's uploaded,
[00:57:41] we automatically create map filters.
[00:57:44] And then here you see that this creator,
[00:57:47] as I mentioned, requested that there's
[00:57:49] a log in wall.
[00:57:50] So basically I just click on log in,
[00:57:54] I go to
[00:57:55] log in.
[00:57:56] I should be able to log in through my
[00:57:59] here we go.
[00:58:01] You'll see my gmail now
[00:58:03] so everybody can spam me
[00:58:06] and yeah, I just logged in and here
[00:58:08] now I have access to the full data set.
[00:58:10] And I can just show you one example
[00:58:13] of how a detailed view. A card view
[00:58:16] looks like obviously this is again
[00:58:19] dependent on the,
[00:58:20] on the type of data.
[00:58:21] So this is a very simple detailed view
[00:58:24] with no nested tables here
[00:58:26] or no nested further nested data.
[00:58:29] But you see that the creator
[00:58:31] has actually hidden some fields.
[00:58:34] These are all customizable
[00:58:37] now sticking with the
[00:58:40] same kind of problem space.
[00:58:44] But moving into Web three,
[00:58:47] this is a crypto crunch base if you will.
[00:58:50] So this creator has collected
[00:58:53] all companies and investors in the crypto
[00:58:57] space.
[00:58:59] So this is where there are
[00:59:01] connections between data sets.
[00:59:03] So you can actually see
[00:59:05] the names of the companies here
[00:59:07] and then those are linked to
[00:59:10] some of their investors.
[00:59:13] So if you go into like one of
[00:59:15] the companies and check the details
[00:59:18] and then you see that I selected
[00:59:20] the wrong one because
[00:59:21] this company actually is
[00:59:22] not funded yet.
[00:59:23] But if you select another one,
[00:59:27] then you will see that this is actually an
[00:59:31] investor and that fund has
[00:59:33] actually invested
[00:59:35] into different companies.
[00:59:36] And then just clicking on
[00:59:38] the company,
[00:59:39] you will actually get to the detailed
[00:59:41] view of that company
[00:59:43] and then you can see
[00:59:44] all the other investors
[00:59:45] in that company.
[00:59:47] So all of this lives in
[00:59:49] like basically they're two tables.
[00:59:52] And then the connection
[00:59:53] between these tables,
[00:59:55] investors and companies are
[00:59:56] the funding events
[00:59:58] which connect this data product
[01:00:02] together or kind of interlinked
[01:00:05] the data product.
[01:00:07] So is that respecting
[01:00:09] like you know if the source for
[01:00:11] this was Airtable or not?
[01:00:14] Some of these are from Airtable.
[01:00:17] Some are from CSV files and some and
[01:00:20] some are from Google sheets.
[01:00:23] So I actually do that
[01:00:24] linking if you do set it
[01:00:26] up in Airtable, it understands
[01:00:28] the link between tables and incorporates
[01:00:31] that into the product.
[01:00:33] Yes. Yes it does. Yes it does.
[01:00:35] So keeping it a little shorter
[01:00:38] actually I'll skip one product but one,
[01:00:43] the next one that I want to show
[01:00:45] is just to showcase like how easy is
[01:00:47] monetization.
[01:00:48] So this is a very simple monetization here
[01:00:51] With $200 one time access.
[01:00:53] You know you pay to
[01:00:54] unlock and then you're taken
[01:00:56] directly to stripe.
[01:00:58] And yep
[01:00:59] you basically pay and you get full access.
[01:01:06] Very cool. And the last one
[01:01:08] that I wanted to show as a product and
[01:01:11] then I'll give the sneak peek
[01:01:13] into the creator interface.
[01:01:14] This is a nicer visual,
[01:01:16] more visual data product
[01:01:18] that I've said this is about,
[01:01:20] you know public data,
[01:01:22] directly downloaded from
[01:01:24] the city of New York's website,
[01:01:27] but just like today
[01:01:28] this is totally un discoverable
[01:01:31] hidden in the csv file
[01:01:33] that you can download.
[01:01:35] But we created a sample
[01:01:37] data product out of
[01:01:38] these, out of these parks.
[01:01:40] So basically you can see
[01:01:41] all the different filters
[01:01:43] and I can just show you
[01:01:45] like a flagship park
[01:01:46] that I know will have more
[01:01:48] details. So like Bronx park here,
[01:01:51] this is a detailed view of the
[01:01:54] park. You can obviously just hide
[01:01:56] any any of these details
[01:01:58] that are not relevant,
[01:01:59] like park department id, you know,
[01:02:00] you can hide or show
[01:02:02] these
[01:02:03] but what's interesting
[01:02:04] and where I was going to
[01:02:06] where I was mentioning that it's
[01:02:07] it's more difficult to create this
[01:02:09] in other
[01:02:10] builders
[01:02:12] or platforms is that we have
[01:02:14] all the park trails included,
[01:02:17] all the water
[01:02:18] features, all the park zones,
[01:02:20] and because it's Covid
[01:02:21] all the social distance
[01:02:22] violations.
[01:02:23] So basically all these are nested
[01:02:26] tables that are linked
[01:02:28] by the park id.
[01:02:29] So New York City has
[01:02:30] park ids for all of the parks
[01:02:32] and it's super simple to
[01:02:35] basically create these nested views
[01:02:39] through these unique ids
[01:02:41] or or true ids as we call them.
[01:02:47] And finally just a sneak peek
[01:02:49] into like how simple the whole setup
[01:02:53] and then the customization
[01:02:55] part will look like.
[01:02:57] So this is, you know, just just a sample
[01:03:00] image of the of the product
[01:03:02] creation basically
[01:03:04] how do you create a project,
[01:03:06] you know, name url
[01:03:07] then you select your input,
[01:03:10] you select your views
[01:03:12] and you basically set it up
[01:03:14] immediately. And as I've said,
[01:03:16] the fielder creation
[01:03:17] for example is is totally automatic.
[01:03:20] They you know, you select the view and
[01:03:22] then those views
[01:03:23] will be automatically added.
[01:03:25] So then you have a starting point
[01:03:28] that you build from
[01:03:31] like this next view
[01:03:32] is you know how the
[01:03:34] creator interface will look
[01:03:36] like you always see
[01:03:37] on the right hand side,
[01:03:38] you see kind of what you're creating,
[01:03:41] what you're doing.
[01:03:42] And then on the left hand side
[01:03:43] you will be kind of
[01:03:44] making your customizations
[01:03:46] or your modifications.
[01:03:47] You know here in this
[01:03:49] part you're you're setting up a page,
[01:03:51] page detail.
[01:03:52] You know you can you know select
[01:03:55] which row or which will be,
[01:03:57] you know the title of the card,
[01:04:00] the subtitle of the card
[01:04:02] and so forth and so forth.
[01:04:04] And just to show another kind of view.
[01:04:08] So you know you can
[01:04:09] create and I haven't mentioned
[01:04:11] that you can actually
[01:04:11] create internal or external products
[01:04:15] with with TrueSource.
[01:04:17] So since you have full access control
[01:04:20] it's totally up to you to set up
[01:04:23] who has access to your data products.
[01:04:26] So you know this is like an
[01:04:28] employee directory kind of product
[01:04:31] that we're showcasing here and here.
[01:04:34] You know you're
[01:04:35] actually adding the section
[01:04:37] to your detailed view
[01:04:39] and you can add
[01:04:41] as I mentioned connections from
[01:04:44] different other data products
[01:04:46] that are already on TrueSource
[01:04:49] and just just a final bit of customization
[01:04:52] as as I've said this is
[01:04:54] a give and take or a push and pull here,
[01:04:56] we're listening to our creators as
[01:04:58] to like what are the most needed,
[01:05:02] customizations
[01:05:04] and you know obviously
[01:05:06] like colors, fund's, images
[01:05:08] are customizable
[01:05:09] and we're going to be working
[01:05:12] on adding more
[01:05:13] customization is based on
[01:05:17] user feedback after
[01:05:19] the upcoming launch of TrueSource.io
[01:05:23] Awesome.
[01:05:24] So if creator is using Airtable
[01:05:27] as their source
[01:05:28] does it automatically stay in
[01:05:30] sync
[01:05:32] from Airtable?
[01:05:33] Or do they have to log in and re publish
[01:05:36] a new version of data?
[01:05:38] Yeah so that's a feature
[01:05:40] that has already been being
[01:05:42] kind of flagged by our
[01:05:43] users that we will need to
[01:05:46] work on right now
[01:05:48] as of the launch it's a one
[01:05:50] time it's a one time thing
[01:05:52] but we have
[01:05:53] yeah we have started working on
[01:05:57] on different A. P. I. S.
[01:05:59] and definitely that will be one the
[01:06:02] Airtable sync will be one of the
[01:06:04] automations that we're
[01:06:06] going to be implementing very soon.
[01:06:08] Gotcha.
[01:06:09] I could see like pros and cons
[01:06:11] of it auto updating
[01:06:12] if you're like in the process
[01:06:13] of typing in,
[01:06:15] you know, data
[01:06:16] and it's depending on what time
[01:06:19] someone loads the
[01:06:20] page on TrueSource, it might,
[01:06:22] you know, data might not be finished,
[01:06:24] but like I could totally see if you
[01:06:25] have a view that's filtered to
[01:06:28] published for instance, you know,
[01:06:30] having that live
[01:06:32] yeah, and talking about that
[01:06:34] one other thing that might come into the
[01:06:36] listener's mind right now,
[01:06:38] is that is it possible to
[01:06:40] offer consumers interaction
[01:06:41] with the data product?
[01:06:43] And the answer to that is
[01:06:45] it's coming as well,
[01:06:46] so, you know, just like ranking,
[01:06:50] commenting,
[01:06:51] so, you know, like back and forth
[01:06:55] data exchange is not
[01:06:57] built right now,
[01:06:58] is not by default included,
[01:07:00] but definitely that's something
[01:07:02] that we heard from early creators
[01:07:04] that there are some use cases when
[01:07:06] commenting, ranking, you know,
[01:07:10] just giving stars to different
[01:07:14] different elements of listings
[01:07:16] might make sense for some use cases.
[01:07:20] I really like the feature of
[01:07:22] being able to share
[01:07:24] or repurposed data so and
[01:07:26] actually monetizing those
[01:07:27] that maybe make their's
[01:07:29] freely available but get
[01:07:30] benefits if it gets shared
[01:07:32] into another one.
[01:07:33] So that collaborative effort was
[01:07:35] pretty cool.
[01:07:36] So like just to give you
[01:07:37] just to give one example for that,
[01:07:39] like the New York
[01:07:40] City parks data product,
[01:07:42] if you are setting up a
[01:07:44] marketplace
[01:07:45] or setting up just the data product
[01:07:48] on, let's say dog hotels,
[01:07:51] you would probably want to
[01:07:53] incorporate like which one
[01:07:55] has close by parks so that
[01:07:56] your puppy can be taken for
[01:07:58] nice walks in the park.
[01:07:59] So that's kind of an
[01:08:00] added value if you know that the dog
[01:08:02] like a dog hotel has a nearby park,
[01:08:04] but you know, real estate office,
[01:08:06] you know, it's just like so many
[01:08:08] so many use cases for
[01:08:10] incorporating just public data.
[01:08:13] And then we haven't
[01:08:14] even started discussing
[01:08:16] about incorporating
[01:08:17] other proprietary data sets.
[01:08:19] Yeah,
[01:08:20] yeah, that's what I was thinking
[01:08:22] down the line. You could, you know,
[01:08:23] make all your data accessible via api
[01:08:27] and monetize the api access,
[01:08:30] yep.
[01:08:31] Yeah, I'm sure that's on your mind.
[01:08:34] So very cool.
[01:08:35] Thank you for showcasing that.
[01:08:36] Zoltan. What time frame
[01:08:38] is there an expected time frame
[01:08:40] of when it's going live?
[01:08:42] Yes, it's a matter of weeks,
[01:08:45] not months. Obviously with launch dates
[01:08:49] it's a bit tricky to look into
[01:08:51] the future and predict.
[01:08:54] But I would say it's a matter of weeks
[01:08:55] until then I would just
[01:08:58] ask for your patience and you know,
[01:09:00] if you have a pressing need,
[01:09:02] you can reach out to us.
[01:09:04] If you join the waitlist
[01:09:06] we have a slack community
[01:09:08] where it's early creators
[01:09:11] are actually up there
[01:09:13] and and discussing with us
[01:09:15] and requesting some features.
[01:09:17] So if you join the waitlist
[01:09:18] you can join the slack community,
[01:09:20] reach out to us.
[01:09:21] And yeah we're as I've said
[01:09:22] we're conducting interviews were
[01:09:23] super happy to talk to anybody
[01:09:26] and as you've seen those
[01:09:28] are live data products already.
[01:09:30] So yeah monetization
[01:09:31] is live,
[01:09:32] we can build for you
[01:09:34] until the self serve platform is ready to
[01:09:37] go.
[01:09:39] Before we ended,
[01:09:40] somebody commented on your
[01:09:41] color changing microphone.
[01:09:42] So you better give
[01:09:44] a shout out to your son.
[01:09:45] Yeah that was actually set up by my
[01:09:47] son last night
[01:09:48] and those are actually
[01:09:50] our corporate colors.
[01:09:52] So yeah shout out to
[01:09:53] my son Daniel for that. Thank you,
[01:09:57] awesome thank you
[01:09:58] Zoltan for coming on today's episode.
[01:10:01] And Kamille as always
[01:10:02] good to have you with us
[01:10:04] and thank you to all
[01:10:05] who joined and hope that you meet
[01:10:08] with us next time
[01:10:09] it will be our final episode
[01:10:11] for the season.
[01:10:11] So be sure to join us.
[01:10:13] We'll have another special guest
[01:10:15] joining next week at
[01:10:16] Tuesday 11 a.m. Eastern.
[01:10:18] Until then we hope you
[01:10:20] are doing well
[01:10:21] and enjoy for those in the
[01:10:22] U.S. your Thanksgiving holiday
[01:10:24] and we'll see you next week.
[01:10:26] Take care, yep.
[01:10:28] Bye.
